The 10th Street Mudhouse coffee shop was formwork's third for the company. Mudhouse is a home-grown Charlottesville brand that focuses on the most special crafting of their coffees. From growing to roasting to brewing, quality is their highest value. With 10th Street, Mudhouse's unique engagement in every community where they have a presence became clear as a brand identity and, in turn became the core mission of the design project. Here we began to realize that each Mudhouse must be unique to their community and yet be recognizable as the Mudhouse.
The white and concrete space is complemented with the richness of walnut wood and sumptuous fabric art installations and metallic faux leather upholstered wall panels and lounge niche.
The client/owner team wanted to work with Charlottesville-based artists. We worked with the sculptor, Lily Erb, to fashion the scale and color of her central hanging piece for the two-story space. Similarly, we worked with the painter and special finishes artist John Owen to develop his hanging wall panels.
The mezzanine lets out onto a roof terrace furnished in similar bright colors, a custom outsized faux turf bed, outdoor bean bags and golden garden gnome tables.
